AI: Toward a complex world

Complexity is one of the key features of our reality. We are living in a VUCA work (volatile, unpredictable, complex, ambiguous) where everything changes constantly. The world operates as a complex system. During the Executive Forum in Lugano participants have looked at the business environment and explored how complex adaptive systems can deal with disruptive events.

EXECUTIVE FORUM 2019 / A.I. & BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT / LUGANO KEYINSIGHTS #2

WE ARE CONNECTED

Nowadays we are all connected, and an high level of connection increase the complexity of a system. A complex system (CS) has more disruptive events, and we want to find a way to deal with them.

COMPLEX SYSTEMS

A CS is neither deterministic, nor random, as its behavior emerges from the interaction of single agents. It has no central control, and it always communicates with the external environment.

(NON)DETERMINISTIC

We grew up believing in determinism, so it may be hard for some to accept the idea that the world operates as a CS. This topic has been debated over the centuries by many philosophers.

COMMUNICATION VS COMPUTATION

AI helps us to take decision in CSs through the use of “Complex adaptive systems” (CAS) which through communication (not computation as with Neural networks) suggest the best actions an agent can take.

COMPLEXITY PROPERTIES

CAS are made by many autonomous Agents connected to each other in different ways. The Agents’ interaction can generate new properties in the CAS, and they can also evolve and organize themselves impacting the whole system.

COMPLEX ADAPTIVE SYSTEMS

The idea behind them is that when you are dealing with CSs you should always be ready to deal with disruptive events. It is not just risk management, because you may face unexpected problems, and yet you must react immediately in the best way possible.
